The Mertonviertel gets a lively residential quarter

Residential quarter Mertonviertel
  • Frankfurt am Main, June 13th 2022

In Frankfurt's Mertonviertel, an important inner-city residential quarter with more than 1,000 apartments is being developed, which is to become lively, future-oriented and livable.

The 80,000 m² site was acquired for this purpose by gsp and ABG in 2020. Together, the municipal housing company ABG Frankfurt Holding GmbH and gsp Städtebau are developing the area of the former Lurgihaus. Demolition of the "Kraken – (Octupus)" - once one of the largest office buildings in Germany - has already begun.

Currently, an urban planning competition is being held under the leadership of the City of Frankfurt's Urban Planning Department, in which 12 architectural firms are participating. The winners are to be chosen in October 2022. A significant residential quarter with over 1,000 apartments and the associated infrastructure, including a new elementary school, two daycare centers and commercial space with tertiary use, is to be created. The transport links are excellent, with a stop on subway line 8 directly adjacent to the site

Among other things, ABG will build the apartments with fixed rents in accordance with the Frankfurt Building Land Decision. gsp will build the unrestricted apartments as well as the areas for commercial use. This contributes to a healthy mix in the overall neighborhood and underlines the good cooperation between gsp and the municipal housing company ABG.

Following the competition, the development plan procedure is to be carried out quickly, so that realization by gsp and ABG can then begin in the respective construction fields.

We are very pleased to be making a significant contribution to the supply of housing with this project, which is so important for Frankfurt.
